Major blow for free-falling Derby County is good news for Sheffield Wednesday's survival bid

There are a number of things that could change in the next 15 days, but one equation is simple; if Sheffield Wednesday lose at Middlesbrough tomorrow and Derby County beat Birmingham City, the Owls are down.

May 8 will see the Rams host Wednesday on the last day of the season, offering hope that Darren Moore’s men could stage an incredible last day escape from the bottom three.

The Owls have spent just one week outside of the drop zone this season, but it will matter not if they are able to overcome the four-point deficit they currently have to make up.

Wednesday make the trip to Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough this weekend, with a home clash against Derby rivals Nottingham Forest serving as their penultimate game.

Jamie Smith, standing in as Owls boss Darren Moore who is recovering from pneumonia, suggested all three matches were must-wins but even that may not be enough; both sides must also contend with the threat of Rotherham United, who sit between them in 22nd place and have two games in hand.

Derby have lost five or their last six matches, winning only one in 12, and have Birmingham City and Swansea City still to play before what could be a show-stopping final day decider.

And Wayne Rooney’s side have been dealt a blow in that talisman defender Andre Wisdom is facing time out with a groin injury.

The former Liverpool man has been a near ever-present and though there is no indication yet of how long he might be missing, it is unlikely he’ll feature against the Blues this weekend.
