Sheffield Wednesday’s preseason fixtures began with a fairly uneventful 1-1 draw against York City on Saturday.

Josh Windass got Wednesday’s only goal of the game in the first half as they went up against the Minstermen, but they were pegged back in the second half after Finlay Barnes got an equaliser after 59 minutes of play.

‘New’ signing Reece James made his first outing since his permanent move from Blackpool, and Akin Famewo was back in the starting XI following his time out injured - meanwhile a number of youngsters got the chance to show what they can do.

Here are our ratings as 22 different players got a runout at the LNER Community Stadium, with the main thing being the fact that they’re now up and running as they get minutes in their legs before the 2023/24 Championship season begins.

Cameron Dawson - 6

Barely had anything to do in the first half, but made a decent save from a freekick early in the second half and did what was necessary whenever called upon.

Reece James - 6

A solid enough outing from the defender on his first outing as a permanent Wednesday player. Overlapped well on occasion and was tidy in possession for the most part.

Dom Iorfa – 7

The Owls defender looked assured and solid in his 45 minutes against York, making some key interventions and passing well when they looked to get forward.

Akin Famewo – 7

Picking up from where he left before his injury at Bristol Rovers, the left-footer was very composed throughout his first game back. 45 minutes in the tank, and he barely put a foot wrong.

Ciaran Brennan - 5

Starting at right back, Brennan did ok when called upon. Wasn’t particularly busy, but the equaliser did come down his side before he was replaced on 60 minutes.

Marvin Johnson – 6

Got up and down the left well, put some decent balls into the box and was involved in a couple of nice plays out wide.

Tyreeq Bakinson – 5

Sitting in the defensive midfield role Bakinson got on the ball plenty, and made a couple of nice passes during his 45 minutes on the field.

Barry Bannan – 7

Got very involved, as you’d expect, and showed some really silky touches before going off at the break. Combined nicely in the middle, and will

Luke Cook – 5

Started quite brightly, but wasn’t able to make too much of a mark as the game went on. Was replaced after an hour and will be pleased to have got the senior minutes under his belt.

Lee Gregory – 6

Showed some excellent link-up play with those behind him, and made some good runs in behind as well. Should really have scored with a chance up close early in the game.

Josh Windass – 6

Showed excellent anticipation for his goal, picking up the ball and then rounding the goalkeeper. Played almost as a 10 inbetween Gregory and Bannan, but not quite as far up as he was at points last season.

Favour Onukwuli – 5

Came on at the break and tried to make himself busy, but didn’t have too much luck on the ball in his first senior outing for the Owls.

Adam Alimi-Adetoro – 5

Showed a couple of decent touches at centre back, but got caught out a bit when York pushed forward. Tried to keep out the equaliser on the line.

Jay Glover – 5

Never really managed to get into things in the middle of the park, but there were some important involvements from him defensively as York pushed on.

Will Vaulks – 5

Took the captiain’s armband from Bannan in the second half, and sat in the deep role occupied by Bakinson in the first half. Very vocal in a side largely made up of youngsters.

Cian Flannery – 5

Moved into the left back position for the second half after replacing James, and was tidy enough without standing out.

Callum Paterson – 5

Put himself about well as usual, showed plenty of determination to try and make things happen, but nothing really clicked for anyone second half.

Michael Smith – 5

The striker cut a pretty lonely figure up top after coming on for Gregory, and was pretty much starved of service for the second half.

Michael Ihiekwe – 5

Took to the field in the second 45 and didn’t really put a foot wrong, but will be disappointed with how the equaliser came about.

Sean Fusire – 6

Looked like the most accomplished of the youngsters in the second half after coming on on the hour-mark. Held his ground well and got forward nicely on occasion too.

Pierce Charles – 5

Didn’t really have anything to do, but he was decent with the ball at his feet for the most part and made no errors.

Joey Phuthi – 5

Battled up and down the right, but wasn’t able to have too much joy going forward in a pretty flat second half.
