Rotherham United striker free to play after red card at Sheffield Wednesday is overturned

The Millers striker was sent off in the second half after a tangle with Wednesday defender Julian Börner at Hillsborough, in a match that the visitors would go on to win, thanks to a goal with the last kick by Freddie Ladapo.

Rotherham confirmed on their website that they had appealed the red card given to Smith, sending footage to the independent Regulatory Commission and subsequently the decision was overturned.

A brief statement read: “The club collated footage of the incident to be considered for an appeal of wrongful dismissal and submitted the claim on Thursday morning.

"The three-match ban that Smith was set to serve as a result of the incident will now no longer be imposed, making him available for selection for Rotherham United’s trip to Brentford this weekend.”

Rotherham’s win on Wednesday night took them to within three points of fourth-bottom Birmingham and with two games in hand over the Blues.

Wednesday, who play Reading on Saturday, are second bottom, four points off the Millers, though the Owls do have a game in hand over their neighbours.
