Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackburn Rovers to win cup competition – What is the Clarets Cup?

Goals from Josh Chapman, Devlan Moses and a Rio Shipston penalty earned a the Owlets an all-action 3-3 draw, setting up a dramatic penalty shootout in the final, which was staged at Blackburn’s vast Brockhall Training facility on Tuesday afternoon.

Shipston’s penalty came at the very last gasp and after Rovers seemed to have done enough to seal the trophy win after heading to put themselves 3-2 up inside the final minute.

Wednesday’s strong reputation for reared talented young goalkeepers in recent years seems to have continued in that Jack Phillips was the hero, saving two in the penalty shootout amid successful spot kicks from Shipston, Mario Bobea, Cian Flannery and Moses.

The Clarets Cup is a junior tournament established by Burnley – hence the name – with a host of big-name clubs from across the EFL competing in a round-robin group stage before a knockout semi-final and final.

Wednesday beat Salford, Mansfield and Bradford City in the group stage, drawing with their eventual final foes Blackburn, before getting past Wigan Athletic and Fleetwood Town in the knockout stages.

While the Clarets Cup is an under-17 competition, due to the delay in the tournament finishing last season, second year scholars from both the Owls and Blackburn were permitted to play in the final.

Any player eligible to feature in the 2021/22 competition last season was granted permission to feature on Tuesday.
