Sheffield Wednesday considering legal action on Celtic’s Liam Shaw move

A lifelong Wednesdayite, Shaw’s move to the Scottish giants was confirmed by The Star as it was agreed last month. His contract will end this summer and he will make the move on pre-contract terms.

A statement released on the club’s website says that Wednesday are ‘considering further steps’ and expressed its frustration after Celtic manager Neil Lennon confirmed the deal had been done in a press conference.

A statement indicated that Lennon’s outburst contravened an agreement for a co-ordinated release to confirm the news.

“We are currently investigating this matter and will consider if there are any further steps available to protect the club’s interest,” a statement read.

“It was not our intention to place this development into the public domain out of respect to all parties concerned.

“However, we were contacted by Celtic informing the club of their intention to formally confirm this development, which was revealed by the former Celtic manager in a media briefing.

“Both clubs exchanged statements in advance of a coordinated release but Celtic have since ceased correspondence to this end.

“Shaw remains a Sheffield Wednesday player until the expiry of his current contract and will be available for selection for the remainder of the season.

“We will make no further comment at this time.”

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri has appeared to lay the blame of Shaw’s departure at the door of his agent.

“I thought he was going to go to Celtic because of the agent talking to Celtic," he said at Darren Moore’s press unveiling earlier this month.

“When he had a chance to play for the first team, he did quite well and we tried to keep him.

“We talked to them quite a long time but they just asked to wait and we know why they asked to wait because maybe they try to find another club.

“We tried to extend his contract but the agent asked to wait and wait. We knew something was wrong and it's normal in football.

“When a player tries to be good, then they already try to find another club.

“It doesn't mean Celtic looked after him a long time.”
