There was plenty of love for Sheffield Wednesday duo, Liam Palmer and Callum Paterson, from their Owls teammates last night after the pair celebrated a big night for Scotland.

The pair both started on the bench as the Scots took on Serbia for a spot at the 2020 European Championships, but had both played their part in helping their side get to the final hurdle.

While it was only Paterson that came on for Steve Clarke’s side in Belgrade, both Wednesday stars were eventually able to celebrate after some penalty shootout drama following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

It looked as though Ryan Christie was going to be the hero and send Scotland to their first major tournament since way back in 1998, but hearts sank as Luka Jovic popped up in the 90th minute to score an equaliser.

Instead it was David Marshall to the rescue as he kept out Jovic’s penalty in the shootout, sending a nation into raptures as many celebrated qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in their lives.

The likes of Izzy Brown, Aden Flint, Barry Bannan, Elias Kachunga and Joey Pelupessy – among others – were all in the mentions of Paterson and Palmer, as well as former teammates such as Ross Wallace and Jacob Murphy.

Bannan congratulated the pair, calling their feat ‘amazing’, while Palmer reacted to his club and country teammates’ post with a cheeky ’magic of the tash’ comment.

There were also words of congratulations from other ex-Owls such as Clinton Morrison and Lucas Joao, with so many of the duo’s current and old teammates clearly delighted at the team’s massive achievement.

The pair will both be working hard to make sure they keep their place in the side for Euro 2020 itself when it begins next June, while the Owls’ other Scottish internationals, Bannan and Jordan Rhodes, will also probably be holding out a bit of hope of doing enough to make it into the side for what is set to be a historic tournament for Steve Clarke’s side.

Scotland begin the tournament on June 14th up against the Czech Republic.
