And while three supersonic strikes from Sheffield Wednesday players went viral late on Tuesday evening and fired the club into the third round of the Carabao Cup, there were moments worth making a note of throughout – both on the pitch and off it.

Here are just a few of the moment you might have overlooked.

McGuinness is good for you

There was a moment early on in the piece when it looked like Mark McGuinness has over-run things and would be hunted down by the oncoming Rochdale attacker.

No, sir.

There will be one or to hairy moments in possession with this Arsenal-schooled defender, you feel, but he’s a classy operator on the ball.

He is left-footed, but played himself out of trouble with his left. Early, early days, but a few might dare say Wednesday have uncovered a good one there.

Sergeant Paterson

Watch Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s goal – the second of the worldies – back in slow-mo.

Keep an eye on joker Callum Paterson just to the left of shot, who lifts his hands in applause for the goal before the ball is even halfway to its destination. Mystic Pato.

On a serious note, he’s a player who has come into criticism from some quarters in recent weeks; Tuesday evening was a display of some of what he can do at his most boisterous.

In both defence and attack, he bolted about and put his body on the line for the cause. He needs a goal to get him going, but his worth to the squad is huge.

Half-time frolics

As is now the way at S6 at half-time, fans were invited onto the pitch to attempt to score at the Kop end, first from a short distance and then progressively longer.

The second of the entrants did the business, bopping it in from the half-way line to the delight of the 9,000 present.

End the piece with a smile and a shuffle off back to friends in the stands? Nope. Our friend took the moment to cheekily goad the away fans by cupping his hands to his ears Paterson-style and producing a ‘shush’ sign.

When life gives you lemons, unleash the ‘housery.

Battling Owls

With a few minutes left and Wednesday cruising, Dennis Adeniran picked up the ball on the right wing and dropped a little showboat.

Rochdale wing-back Aidy White did not like that one bit and went charging down the wing in search of his pound of flesh, nibbling at the Owls man’s heels, calves and whatever else he could lay a lace on.

Moments later, Devante Rodney squared up to Will Vaulks.

But it was Wednesday who fronted up in those final moments and seemed to win the flare-up. They didn’t back down.

Social media fun and games

The swfc hashtag was a fun place to be last night.

If you haven’t seen the Alan Partridge edit of the goals, seek them out.

And Josh Windass’ tweet showing Liam Palmer’s reaction to the worldie-fest? A nice touch.

A special moment

Rochdale keeper and lifelong Wednesdayite Richard O’Donnell didn’t get on the pitch sadly, with Cieran Slicker preferred on the night.

But after the match the former Owls stopper came out with a youngster, presumed to be his son, to share a little time under the lights on the grass of his spiritual home.

Cameron Dawson came out to meet the youngster and one or two others took the time.

Bit of a tearjerker, to be honest. Football is ace sometimes.
