'I know I'm the luckiest man on earth'

JAMES Birkinshaw admits he is the luckiest man on earth after coming through a horror speedway crash with no broken bones.

The popular Tigers rider piled into the Owlerton safety fence during Thursday's win over Edinburgh which caused a long delay as both he and Monarchs man Derek Snedden needed treatment.

Birkinshaw spent several hours in hospital with a suspected shoulder injury, but later was told there was nothing broken and he could go home.

He spent the weekend resting at home in Sheffield and faces a race against time to be fit for this Thursday's massive home meeting with reigning champions Kings Lynn.

He said: "I realise I'm the luckiest man on earth right now. When you look at some of the things that have happened in speedway this year, I've got away with it big time.

"I know how spectacular the crash was and I've seen the photographs. It looks dreadful and I know how fortunate I am not to be seriously hurt because of it.

"I don't feel too bad, just bruised and sprained, and that's nothing compared to how it might have turned out for me."

And Birkinshaw has made a special point of thanking those who helped him in the aftermath of the crash.

"I'd like to put on record my sincere thanks to the St Johns staff and all the track staff – they were brilliant at a very difficult time," said Birkinshaw.

"I'd also like to thank the other riders, from both Sheffield and Edinburgh, they showed a lot of concern and I cannot thank them enough.

"And I can't forget the fans and my sponsors – there has been a lot of concern and I'd like to thank everyone who has been in touch to wish me well.

"I want to ride on Thursday, but we'll have to see.”
