Kids offered free tickets for Woods title shot

PROMOTERS of Clinton Woods' next World title defence have taken the surprise decision to give away free tickets to kids.

Anyone under 16 qualifies for a ticket for the Sheffield IBF light-heavyweight's Sheffield Arena contest with Mexican Julio Gonzalez as long as they are accompanied by a full-paying adult.

It was the idea of promoter Dennis Hobson and Woods' trainer Richard Poxon.

They recognise that boxing is having to compete hard for fans in a sporting market place dominated by football - and with cage fighting and martial arts getting a firmer foothold.

Poxon says: "We wanted to do something to attract younger people in our community to boxing.

"We are the first to acknowledge tickets can be expensive (this fight rises from 35 to 200 VIP ringside) but this is an opportunity for mums and dads to bring their kids to a genuine World title fight they may never forget."

Tickets go on sale at the Arena on Friday.

The fight, on September 29, will be screened by Setanta TV.
