No joy for Tykes by the sea as big guns fail

YORKSHIRE disappointed a large holiday crowd at Scarborough yesterday with a poor performance as they crashed to a five-wicket defeat to Surrey in the Pro40 League.

Yorkshire failed dismally with the bat, all the 'big guns' misfiring including Inzamam who made only nine in his second appearance.

It was left to Darren Gough, with an unbeaten 49 batting at No 10 to enable Yorkshire even to reach three figures before they were all out for 145.

Even that looked far beyond them when they stood at 58-8 and Gough's ninth wicket stand of 72 with David Wainwright, 26, at least gave them something to bowl at.

However, Surrey eased home in the 30th over at 147-5.

Notts blasted 270-6 (Mark Wagh 65, Graeme Swann 59, Will Jefferson 50, Chris Read 46no) before dismissing Gloucestershire for 154, Swann taking 5-17.

This followed up their two- wicket win over Northants in the County Championship when they made 233-8.

In Division Two of the Pro40 League, Middlesex moved to within a point of Yorkshire with victory over Kent.

Durham overhauled Leicestershire's 215-5 (HD Ackerman 72, John Sadler 46), replying with 218-4, Phil Mustard making 78 and Gordon Muchall 41no.

VVS Laxman hit 85 not out to help Lancashire to 254-6 but it wasn't enough as Warwickshire replied with 255-4, Steve Davies making 89 and Graeme Hick making an unbeaten 50.
