The striker had made his first appearance for the Owls a week previously in the opening game of the 1986/87 season at Charlton, but waited a week before announcing himself to his new fans.
Coming off the bench for Nigel Worthington, Hirst scored within a few minutes in what would end up in a 2-2 draw with Everton on August 25, 1986. Here’s who he played alongside that day and what they went on to do.
9. Gary Shelton
Shelton (second left) spent five years at Wednesday after joining from Aston Villa, helping the Owls to promotion in '84. He moved onto Oxford and had a caretaker spell as manager at Bristol City while at Ashton Gate and finished his playing career at Chester before taking on a coaching role there. 10. Lee Chapman
The much-travelled striker scored goals at most of his many clubs, including 63 for the Owls. Went to France for a short spell in 1988 after Howard Wilkinson left to join Leeds but was quickly back home at Nottingham Forest where he hlped Brian Clough's side to the League Cup. After that he played for nearly everybody - including winning the league at Leeds. 11. Carl Shutt
Yet another who would make that oft-travelled road to West Yorkshire, only this time he went via Bristol City after leaving Hillsborough in 1987. Famiously scored for Leeds in that behind-closed-doors win over Stuttgart in Barcelona. Went on to play for Birmingham, Man City, Bradford, Darlington and Kettering before a brief period in coaching. 12. David Hirst
A darling of Hillsborough, Hirst would go on to score 150 goals for the Owls before injures took their toll and he was sold to Southampton for £2m, just a few years after Sir Alex Ferguson had made numerous attempts to take him to Manchester United. He signed Eric Cantona instead. Hirst eventually retired aged just 32 in 2000 and had a few different jobs at Wednesday, in the academy and hospitality. Now works as a scout. Photo: Shaun Botterill
