Sheppard out to make Legue Steelers' top scorer

DAVE MATSOS is considering using Doug Sheppard as the playmaker who could turn Jeff Legue into the league's top goalscorer.

Legue’s pace and eye for goal sets him out as a potent weapon in the Sheffield Steelers’ attack of season 2007-8.

And Matsos believes the guile and accuracy of centreman Shephard would compliment Legue, who is new to British ice hockey.

Added to that, he could place Ashley Tait on the same line, making the formation one of the most feared in the Elite League.

Legue scored 28 goals and 27 assists (55 points in 52 games) for Landsberg 2000 EV in Germany last season.

While Shephard was a similarly productive points taker for Basingstoke Bison during the last three seasons.

Tait notched 59 points in 66 games for Coventry Blaze.

A club spokesman said: “Dave thinks this line could do a lot of damage. Nothing is set in stone, as the training camp has yet to start. But this is the line he is considering.”

That could leave a second line of Jonathan Phillips, Joe Talbot and Ryan Finnerty, with a third line of Jeremy Cornish, Warren Tait and Jason Hewitt.

Matsos has returned to Sheffield after his summer break back home in Canada.
