Six-hit Steelers

Sheffield Steelers started the Men's North of England League Division Two with a 6-3 win at Manchester Waconians A.

New skipper Sam Glover was on the scoresheet, as was fellow co-captain Ben Lyon with two goals as Steelers always kept their noses in front.

"Defensively we were solid, but 6-3 sounds a close game. We created a lot of chances, but even though we didn't take them we always had the upper hand," Glover said.

Steelers won the opening quarter 3-0, before sharing the next quarter 1-1 for a 4-1 half-time lead. The final two quarters were also shared 1-1, but Glover was happy to get the points on the board and predicted they will get stronger as the season progresses.

"The biggest thing this year for us is maintaining consistency in our team and our play," added Glover, who has taken over at the helm from Wales international goalkeeper Simon Jones.

Steelers were relegated from the Premier last season, but further goals from attackers Omar Dupree and Pete Sylvester, and midfielder Chris Wainer secured the points.

Sheffield University had their first game of the season postponed with Brooklands Hulmeians, although early plans suggest the fixture will be played on Saturday October 27.
