Titans coach Werahiko goes on watch

ROTHERHAM Titans head coach Phil Werahiko will run the rule over 39 players in the club's two friendlies over the weekend.

Mike Whitehead will captain the 'A' team in tonight's game against Hull at Haworth Park (6.30pm) with new boys Kevin Corrigan, Rob Connolly, Stephen Grissing and Rob Sweeney also named in a strong line-up.

The first team host Scottish Premiership side Melrose at Bawtry Road tomorrow (3pm) with starts handed to scrum-half Chris Hallam, fly-half Brendan Nolan and Alex Dunlop at No 8.

Werahiko will cast a watchful eye over both squads but admits he is getting closer to finalising which players will begin the season as first-choice.

"These may be friendly fixtures but results and performance levels are very important to us and will go a long way to influencing the side that will start against Pertemps Bees on the opening weekend," he said.

"We have a big squad and the development players have held their own in the trial fixture and training sessions.

"Nobody is an automatic choice and places will be determined by performances."
