Bulbs hand-out as thoughts turn to next spring

LEAVES are only just falling from the trees - but already community groups in Sheffield are preparing for next spring after being given half a million free flower bulbs.

Sackloads of daffodil, crocus and bluebell bulbs have been given out to support the city's entry into next year's Britain in Bloom competition - where Sheffield is representing the region after receiving a gold award at this year's Yorkshire in Bloom awards.

Among the first to pick up their allocations have been Val and Philip Joyce of Beighton Allotments, Jean and Harry Holland from Mosborough Village Action Group, and Pete Stowe and three-year-old Theo Robinson of Carterknowle and Millhouses Community Group.

Bulbs will create a colourful carpet of flowers in areas across the city including woodlands, on grass banks, on verges and in open spaces.

Coun Ibrar Hussain, Sheffield Council cabinet adviser for streetscene, said: "Our success in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom has been greatly helped by enthusiastic support from local community groups, schools and other organisations.

"This will bring the total of Spring-flowering bulbs distributed in the city in recent years to over four million."
