Celebrating independence

CELEBRATIONS were taking place in Sheffield today to mark the 60th anniversary of Pakistan Independence Day.

The Eastern Eye Restaurant on Firth Park Road was holding a free party, expected to be attended by hundreds of revellers, from 1pm. Visitors were invited to join in the celebrations.

And tonight the Lord Mayor Coun Arthur Dunworth and Lady Mayoress Kathleen Chadwick were due to attend the Pakistan Muslim Centre on Woodbourn Road from 5pm to 7pm to mark the occasion.

It is 60 years today since Pakistan declared independence from India - at that time under British rule - on August 14 1947. Two regions separated, forming West Pakistan, now simply Pakistan, and East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.
