Cyclists' trek in memory of dad

TWO brothers are to get on their bikes in a cross-Channel challenge to raise money for the Sheffield hospital that cared for their dad.

Robert Lindsay, aged 27, and Andrew Bastow, 22, will cycle from London to Paris in a charity ride for Neurocare - whose Brainwave campaign aims to bring three brain scanners to the Royal Hallamshire and Sheffield Children's Hospitals.

The pair, from Retford, north Notts, will ride in memory of Simon Bastow, Andrew's dad and Robert's step-father.

Simon was treated for a brain tumour at the Hallamshire, but died in April aged 52, a year after he was diagnosed.

Robert and Andrew, with Andrew's girlfriend Michelle Inman, 23, and family friends Chris Arrowsmith, 27, and Paul Jones, 22, aim to continue his work supporting the campaign.

Robert raised 3,500 by running the Amsterdam marathon last year, and 1,200 more was collected at Simon's funeral.

Robert said they aim to raise more than 6,400 from the ride, which would mean they have collected almost 10,000 .

"Our dad would be immensely proud of us. He was a keen cyclist and will be in our thoughts throughout.

"We just want to give something back to the hospital. Simon was treated by some wonderful doctors, nurses and surgeons and so it is our way of saying thanks."

Mum Dot said: "I am so proud of my two boys who have continued with the work Simon did to support Neurocare. It has been an immensely sad time for us all but to know that we can do something constructive has helped us through.

"With the tumour Simon had he didn't really stand a chance but there are people out there who these scanners will make such a difference to so."
