“I think there’s something about food that provokes people to tell their own story”, said Ruby Tandoh. The former Great British Bake Off finalist turned food writer and author is preparing to be interviewed on her book Eat Up! as part of Sheffield’s Off the Shelf literary festival tomorrow, Friday October 19. Her book – also released in paperback today – is a far cry from a regular recipe book. It is a celebration of the fun of
food, exploring its impact on culture and emotion, as well as busting myths about diet and ‘wellness’.
Ruby said: “I like to think that Eat Up is everything that happens just outside the plate itself.
“The feedback from the book has been really, really nice.
“I think there’s something about food that provokes people to tell their own story, a lot of people have told their own anecdotes and shared their own stories, that’s been lovely.”
Ruby doesn’t see herself writing another recipe book soon.
“I think I’ve spent my energy when I used to go back and forth from Tesco with huge bags of food and tasting recipes” – she said, but is keeping her options open.
She has just moved to London after two and a half years in Sheffield.
”Genuinely I’m heartbroken to be leaving Sheffield”, she said. I really love it.”
”A while ago I had to do a radio interview in London and the guy was a typical Londoner, he couldn’t understand anything outside of the M25, and he said ‘Aren’t you going to miss food when you go back to Sheffield?’ It was awful.
”I love Sheffield’s food scene, one of my favourite places to go is the Two Steps fish and chip shop on Sharrow Vale Road.”
Ruby’s talk is at the Pennine Theatre in the Owen Building at Sheffield Hallam University, on Howard Street, from 7pm tomorrow.
