Engineer's new position

RETFORD man William Robinson has been appointed chief engineer of Cunard's newest ocean liner the Queen Victoria, which will sail for the first time in December.

William, who has worked for Cunard for nearly 20 years, currently serves as chief engineer aboard the QEII.

On his new vessel he will be responsible for maintenance of the ship's technical equipment, considered among the most advanced in the industry.

DRONFIELD Probus will next meet at 9.45am at the Pioneer Club off Stonelow Road on Wednesday October 17 when speaker Frank Coupland will give a talk on the History from the Air.

The club for retired men which meets the first and third Wednesday of each month welcomes new members.

Gift of sight

ROCKLEY Rotary Club is helping people see in the third world. The club based in Wortley first collected unwanted spectacles and has now bought a machine which measures focal length so the glasses can be matched to those who need them.

In the army

PUPILS from Edward Sheerien School in Carlton, Barnsley, were put through their paces when they took part in a two-day army skills course at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall near York.
