Film special planned for school's double celebration

A LEADING Sheffield secondary school is planning a double celebration next year - and a film project is being planned to capture its life and times.

Next year is the 120th anniversary of the original Central School - which later became today's High Storrs School.

Founded in 1888 and based in the city centre, off Leopold Street, it had few spaces for play or sports. So pupils had to travel instead all the way up to Bents Green for physical education lessons.

Eventually, in 1933, a new school was built at Bents Green which became known as High Storrs. It celebrates its 75th birthday next year.

The school is now a listed building and will be preserved when it's extensively renovated next year as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Although the outer facade of the building will remain, many of the original internal features will be changed.

Plans are now being drawn up to create a film telling the story of both historic schools, beginning with an open evening on October 11.

People willing to be interviewed either on camera or audio tape should come along to the event, with organisers keen to capture all eras of the two schools.

Anyone who cannot attend but still wants to take part should contact the Centralians at [email protected] or contact deputy head Ray Everitt on 0114 2670000.
