Garden work growing with a £1,000 grant

TOOLS at the ready!

A group of Sheffield pals who joined forces to transform a disused plot of wasteland into a community garden have more reason to get cracking than ever after receiving a 1,000 cash boost.

Members of the 47-50 group were delighted to win the O2 It’s Your Community grant to help them transform allotment plots in Hagg Hill, Rivelin Valley.

The group - named after the plots they hope to transform - have already started work at the site, where they have spent hours clearing a 40-year build-up of weeds and rubbish.

The cash means the group will be able to pay for skips to take the waste away and tools to get planting underway before winter.

The project was the brainchild of Tchad Western, who said: “We have big plans for the site.

“We want it to be a place where we can learn different methods of cultivation, while at the same time preserve the natural habitat.

“Most importantly we want it to be a place where anyone can come along, get their hands dirty and meet all kinds of people.”

Frasier McGuire, from O2’s Meadowhall Store, who presented the cheque to group members, said: “This is a fantastic project.

“The awards are designed to make a difference to communities all over the UK by providing the funds to get ideas off the ground.”
