Huge bill for asbestos dumped in wood

FLY-TIPPERS who dumped six tonnes of asbestos sheeting close to a Sheffield wood landed the Forestry Commission with a removal bill likely to run into thousands of pounds.

The asbestos was left in a public car park next to Wharncliffe Wood, on Woodhead Road, Grenoside, overnight.

Although environmental health experts examined the material and do not deem it a risk to public health, specialist contractors must be brought in to dispose of it correctly.

Forester Albin Smith said: “This is by far the biggest fly-tipping incident we have ever had in Wharncliffe Wood. It’s deeply depressing that people can be so stupid and callous.

“We will have to divert money from conservation projects to clear up the mess. It will probably mean we will have to close the car park during night time hours, which is something we have resisted in the past.”

Covering 1,200 acres, between Sheffield and Barnsley, Wharncliffe is one of the region’s most popular woods with bikers, horse riders and walkers. It is being restored as an ancient woodland site.

The Forestry Commission, which manages the woods, told the police and is urging anyone with any information about the culprits to call 01433 650 072.
