In danger of being victims

THE ugly side of the internet has arrived in Sheffield with a site broadcasting disturbing images of local teenagers brandishing weapons and posing menacingly in what can only be considered to be a glorification of violence and lawlessness.

Guns, knives and knuckle dusters are among weapons proudly displayed by up to 15 groups of youths from different locations covering the whole of Sheffield. There are also mocked up images of offences on the Sheffield Soljaz (street-slang for Soldiers) site.

Police are investigating and say they want to shut down the site and every decent parent in the city will urge them to get on with it. But there are obviously other parents around Sheffield who either don't care or are incapable of monitoring the activities of their offspring when dabbling on the internet.

They should wake up to the potential consequences of allowing their children to idolise violence - before they become its victims.

Chance to get your writing into print

ARE you made of the write stuff? We suspect so. For tonight we have joined up with Meadowhall to launch a competition to find the newsmen and women of tomorrow in a competition.

It offers would-be journalists the chance to write a news story based on a fun event being staged at Meadowhall this weekend - with the best ones appearing in print in The Star or featured on our website.

There are other prizes too to bring out the reporter in entrants. But we are sure that seeing their work in print is reward enough for anyone with an eye to entering this profession.
