Police warning over bogus callers

ELDERLY Sheffield residents are being warned to be vigilant following a spate of thefts by bogus callers.

Police are investigating two incidents and are desperate to stop other elderly or vulnerable residents being targeted.

Crime Reduction Officer Phil Bullivant said: "While not wanting to frighten elderly people unnecessarily, we feel it is important for the community to be aware of the different tactics that are being employed by bogus callers."

The first incident happened when an 86-year-old woman in Manor opened her door to a woman who asked for some change to make a phone call.

The stranger then entered the property and barged her way into the resident's bedroom. When the resident reached the bedroom, the stranger left the house and the resident discovered her hand bag and purse had been stolen.

The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 4in tall, of slim build.

She spoke with a local accent and the incident happened at around 2.30pm on Saturday September 29.

The second incident occurred at an address in Wybourn when a 79-year-old man had his bedroom ransacked.

He answered his door to a man claiming there was a problem with the water at his property.

This incident happened at around 1pm on Wednesday October 3.
