£8m council tax clawback

SHEFFIELD Council has the second worst record for uncollected council tax in the whole of the region, with £8,174,000 outstanding from the 06-07 financial year - an increase on the previous year, when £7,433,000 was uncollected. What is your reaction?

"Council tax might be unfair and regressive, but it must be collected - if it were collected from everyone who is liable it would be lower! The city council must get a grip on this - it's not as if there aren't things the money could be spent on (the roads, street lighting, cutting the rate of the tax...)"

Rob McIlveen, aged 25, Crookes

"If you assume those not paying council tax are tenants then deduct payments from benefits claimed. If this is not the case, collect through the local courts claims costs and punitive interest."

"We pay our council tax by direct debit over 10 monthly payments and I would like to ask Sheffield Council three questions:

1. How can people be allowed to get away with not paying their council tax?

2. How are these amounts owing allowed to become such large amounts?

3. What is being done to recoup these amounts?

If people are not prepared to pay their council tax they should be taken to court and made to pay including the court costs, and if they continue not to pay then evict them!"

"If only the Tory and Lib Dem councillors found time to check the Communities and Local Government website before wasting council tax payers' money on a pointless inquiry they'd have found that the Sheffield final collection rate compares favourably with the English average."

Karl Hallam, aged 35, Hangingwater
