Sheffield cricketer Joe Root teams up with Thornbridge on new beer called Root 66 in aid of Children's Hospital Charity

The latest beer from Derbyshire-based Thornbridge, which owns six pubs in Sheffield and one in Dronfield, will be called “Root 66,” named after Joe’s shirt number and nickname.

It will be an aptly brewed 6.6 per cent IPA (India Pale Ale).

All profits generated from sales of Root 66 will be donated to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, of which Dore-born Joe is the patron, and will be used to build a new cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The international cricket star and England test captain said of the collaboration: “I am delighted to support Thornbridge Brewery’s ‘Root 66’. It is fantastic that all profits from this special bottle will be donated to The Children’s Hospital Charity, and will contribute to the essential building of a new Cancer and Leukaemia ward.”

“Root 66” will also help to commemorate Joe’s 100th test match for England, during which he scored a double century on the way to the team’s famous Test victory in India.

Teaming up with our long-time supporters Thornbridge Brewery, this special bottle will support building an amazing new Cancer and Leukaemia ward at the hospital, which sees patients from across the UK for chemotherapy, operations and bone marrow transplants.”

Joe got married to Carrie Cotterell at Thornbridge Hall in December 2018, and led to Thornbridge co-founder and owner Simon Webster coming up with the idea for a collaboration.

Simon said: “We are delighted to be working with Joe to launch a beer for such an incredible cause close to all our hearts. We have worked closely with The Children’s Hospital

Charity previously and know the difference they make to so many families, so we’re delighted to be able to support them alongside Joe. We’re also ecstatic to be launching a beer with such a legend in the world of cricket!”

A spokesperson for Thornbridge said Root 66 is a “beautifully balanced beer” with a ripe hedgerow fruit on the nose and a full bodied, honeyed malt character on the palate.
