5. 5, Brewery boss shuts down Sheffield pub after ‘not serving his favourite dessert’
A story about The Cow and Calf in Grenoside shutting suddenly is the fifth most read of the year. Louise Brownhill, who ran the pub with her husband Steve, took to Facebook to claim Humphrey Smith, owner of the Samuel Smith brewery to which the pub belongs, visited and been disappointed when they were unable to serve him his favourite dessert. They were fired, she claimed, despite explaining that they didn’t have the dessert – understood to be a chocolate fondant – because they hadn’t been provided with a freezer. The story was published on August 21, and was read 162,000 times. No-one from Samuel Smith was available for comment when the story was published. Photo: Google

News of when flights abroad were likely to resume with travel operators including Jet2, Ryanair and easyJet on June 11 proved popular with readers. Police were responding to an incident involving a man who had taken ill, and also arrested another man while they were at the scene for possession of drugs. The story was published on February 29. A relationship update from Owen Jenkins who tied the knot with a complete stranger on Married At First Sight was the eighth most popular Star story of the year. Owen was happy to report that he and Michelle are still married, and very much in love. The story was published on October 29, and racked up 137,000 page views.
