Woman, 59, stabbed to death

NEIGHBOURS living in a quiet Sheffield street where a woman was stabbed to death today described their horror at seeing a man wielding a carving knife.

Police have confirmed a 59-year-old woman died after suffering stab wounds at a flat in Glencoe Road, Norfolk Park, at 10am on Sunday.

Today residents on the street described seeing a man with a knife sitting on the side of the road and rocking back and forwards before stripping naked.

One man, who didn't want to be named, said: "I called the police after I saw a guy on the pavement ranting and raving and wielding a carving knife.

"I was on the phone to police giving them a running commentary. He started to undress and put his knife and his clothes in the wheelie bin outside. Then he started throwing rocks at cars parked on the street."

The resident said when police arrived and tried to restrain the man he tried to attack the officers.

"He still had a brick in his hand. He was wielding the brick at the police officers but they managed to subdue him."

Another neighbour said: "There were about 10 police cars and two ambulances. It was mayhem. They sealed off Glencoe Road and later put up a white tent. This is a really quiet area, there's never any trouble. It's quite shocking to have something like this happen on your doorstep."

Gwen Hardy, also from Glencoe Road, said: "When I came out the man was lying on the ground naked. Police had handcuffed him. Then they picked him up and put him in a van.

"Everybody had come out on to the street.

"I didn't know the man, or the lady who died but we did sometimes hear shouting from the flats."
