Yorkshire batsman backs plan for £80,000 city cricket complex

YORKSHIRE batsman Craig White gave full backing to ambitious new plans for an £80,000 cricket complex to be built in an inner city Sheffield suburb.

The former England all-rounder was at Abbeyfield House in Burngreave to listen to residents' views on proposals to install an Urban Cricket arena in the nearby park.

The scheme, backed by test cricket sponsors npower, will build on the success of a pilot project set up in Lambeth, south London.

Craig said the aim was to get as many youngsters playing the sport as possible, and that there was plenty of untapped talent in Sheffield to develop.

Sheffield is one of five cities chosen to be home to an arena, which will be built on a site currently occupied by old tennis courts.
