Smokey was abandoned in the woods, and stayed where he was, faithfully waiting for his owner to come back - despite not being tied up.
Faith the Presa Canario was tied up and abandoned, found on a rainy night caked in mud and "emaciated". Luckily, she was found and bought to safety. Could you be the next good thing to happen to her?
Some of the newcomers at Thornberry include Luna, a unique Saluki cross, lovely one-eyed Betty the bulldog, and Alice the poodle cross.
The gallery below includes all of Thornberry's 16 hopefuls, along with 11 dogs from the council's kennels.
We will bring the other half of the council's furry residents to The Star next week, but if you want to get to know them before then, you can find them all on Sheffield Council Stray Kennels' website.
Maisie was brought into kennels after being found roaming as a stray. She is an American bulldog, and according to her microchip, only 14 months old. She is a very energetic, boisterous girl who loves to play and do the zoomies! She does need to learn some manners and basic training, sometimes she doesn’t realise her large size. She will need lots of work but has lots of potential and really deserves to find a perfect home.
Sweet Faith was found abandoned, tied to a fence in a park on a cold, rainy night. She had desperately been trying to dig herself free and was caked in mud as result, was severely emaciated, had mutilated cropped ears, and had been used for breeding. But despite all this, she still has the sweetest, friendliest, most gentle temperament. She is now steadily gaining weight and has had a good bath. Faith is a Presa Canario, around 2 years old. Faith is a placid girl, she loves her food and her bed - comforts that she probably hasn’t had before.
Gail is a lovely 18-month-old medium-sized lurcher. She was previously adopted but sadly returned. Her previous home described her as very loving, people-orientated and intelligent. She is housetrained and already spayed. She struggles with separation anxiety, which was beginning to improve in her previous home. She has the sweetest temperament, and loves her toys and treats, making her very trainable.
This lovely boy was brought into kennels after being found roaming as a stray. The kennel staff have aged him around 11 months, and named him Doug. They believe Doug is a mastiff cross, large in size with plenty of filling out left to do. Doug has a very sweet, affectionate and playful character. He is strong on the lead and will need a strong capable handler with the time to give him all aspects of training.
