Sheffield is a beer-lover’s paradise packed with amazing pubs serving up a great range of drinks, including many brewed in the city.
Each month, CAMRA Sheffield & District selects the best of the bunch, based largely on the quality and range of real ales available there but also taking into account various other factors from the decor and atmosphere to the food.
These are the 11 latest winners of the group’s coveted pub of the month award, together with the reason they were chosen. The list stretches back to 2020 as the distribution of the monthly award was badly disrupted by Covid, and in that time one pub has scooped the accolade twice.
The Brothers Arms on Well Road in Heeley, Sheffield, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for March 2022. The pub, previously known as Ye Olde Shakespeare Inn, offers great views of the city from its beer garden. It is owned by comedy band the Everly Pregnant Brothers, so it is no surprise that it champions live music. The Bar Stewards, on Gibraltar Street in the West Bar area of Sheffield, near Kelham Island, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for May 2022. The pub, which has since been renamed West Bar Tap, was praised by CAMRA as an 'outstanding' micro-pub. The warm welcome, the 'great' choice of cask ales and keg beers served by 'friendly and knowledgable' staff, and the large yard at the rear all got a mention Photo: Google
Shakespeares pub, on Gibraltar Street, in Sheffield city centre, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for June 2022 - its latest of many wins. The pub was built in 1821 as a coaching inn and it boasts beautiful stained glass windows and is adorned with many fascinating brewery collectibles, with wooden barrels serving as tables. It is known for hosting live music, and CAMRA praised not just the selection of cask beers and craft keg but also what it called one of the best malt whisky ranges outside of Scotland Photo: Google
The Rutland Arms, on Brown Street, in Sheffield city centre, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for August 2022. The distinctive pub, which was built in 1936 and is famed for its quirky decor, was hailed for having 'one of the best beer ranges in Sheffield, along with an 'excellent' spirit range including a great selection of single malt whiskies and rums. CAMRA also praised the top-notch food, inculding the ever-changing specials board which always includes vegetarian and vegan options. There was also a mention for the Rutland's celebrated jukebox and the blackboard with its list of 'recommended' and ‘forbidden' music Photo: Google
