Sheffield is a beer-lover’s paradise packed with amazing pubs serving up a great range of drinks, including many brewed in the city.
Each month, CAMRA Sheffield & District selects the best of the bunch, based largely on the quality and range of real ales available there but also taking into account various other factors from the decor and atmosphere to the food.
These are the 11 latest winners of the group’s coveted pub of the month award, together with the reason they were chosen. The list stretches back to 2020 as the distribution of the monthly award was badly disrupted by Covid, and in that time one pub has scooped the accolade twice.
Richard Henderson is pictured here at the Dorothy Pax pub in the old railway arches beside the canal at Victoria Quays in Sheffield city centre. The quirky boozer, which only opened in 2017, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for September 2022. CAMRA explained how it takes its name from the last ever Sheffield Keel to work on the Sheffield navigation - part of which was used to create the distinctive bar top. There was praise for the range of beers from local breweries and the 'staggering' amount of live music. One the more eccentric features highlighted by CAMRA is the Pax Disco Cape, which drinkers are apparently entitled to wear on their birthday Photo: National World
The Crow Inn on Scotland Street, just outside Sheffield city centre, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month for October 2022 - having previously won in July 2021. The pub, run by the people behind another multiple winner, the Rutland Arms, was opened in 2019 at the old Crown Inn, which dates back to 1797 and was the scene of a notorious murder in 1859 during the Sheffield Outrages. The building had more recently been used as a hotel and a nightclub. CAMRA praised the selection of beers, including four regularly changing guest tipples, and the 'extensive' range of malt whiskies and bourbons. Despite there being no kitchen, visitors can enjoy 'Kevins Pies' and a tempting array of bar snacks. The Crow Inn is also a hotel with seven en-suite rooms starting from £50 a night. Photo: Google
The Church House pub, on St James’ Street, near Sheffield Cathedral, was named CAMRA Sheffield & District Pub of the Month for November 2022. The pub, located in a gothic Grade II-listed building, has a reputation for showcasing the best local bands, with fans also praising the great atmosphere and the quality of the drinks and service there. Since becoming a pub in 1987, its previous names include the unforgettable Ferret and Trouserleg, along with Gladstones, the Priory and the Sanctuary Photo: Google
The Dog & Partridge pub on Trippet Lane in Sheffield city centre is the latest winner of CAMRA Sheffield & District's pub of the month award, for March 2023. The pub dates back to 1796 and boasts numerous original features including real fireplaces, along with some more modern graffiti art outside on Bailey Street. CAMRA praised the range of cask and keg beers, often including ales from Stancil, Abbeydale and other local breweries. Conor Smith has been landlord there since 2012 and CAMRA said he had recently become free of any brewery ties. CAMRA highlighted the regular events it hosts, including weekly quizzes and folk evenings. It also screens most major sporting events on its TVs. Photo: Dog & Partridge
